5 Ways Religious Spaces Risk Neglecting Their Community

Published by Janeé Nealey, Founder of Queer Ministry

1. We don't read scripture with the "Others" in mind. We choose who the worthy "Others" are.

2. We refuse to humble ourselves and listen to the Spirit of Love. We refuse to acknowledge Blackness & Indigeneity. We refuse to show respect. We refuse to acknowledge trauma and suffering, and so we refuse to heal.

3. We don't allow freedom in God. We use God to shackle others. We use God to be violent and abusive. We use God to judge, to feel mighty. We find belonging with God, but close the door behind us. We do not love our enemies.

4. We forsake reasoning, logic, and context in order to further our agendas. We settle for the pursuit of money, popularity, and comfort. We are not thirsty for truth, accountability, and justice.

5. We refuse to humble ourselves and listen to the Spirit of Love. We refuse to acknowledge Blackness & Indigeneity. We refuse to show respect. We refuse to acknowledge trauma and suffering, and so we refuse to heal.
